If you're planning a trip to Paris, whether it's your destination or you're just passing through, a little preparation can go a long way. We want to share our experiences from both a 24 hour stopover and a whirlwind weekend in Paris. If you only have a couple of days to explore this incredible city, here’s how you can make the most of it. Start with these first and then add what's still on our Paris list to your itinerary.

Where to Stay in Paris

Walking from Le Méridien Etoile to the Arc de Triomphe

On both of our visits we have stayed near the famous Avenue des Champs-Élysées.  On our first visit we stayed at the Le Méridien Etoile using our then Starwood (now Mariott) points and on the 2nd visit we stayed at Hotel California Champs-Élysées. This location makes it easy to walk to the famous Avenue and see the Arc de Triomphe.  If you're not in a hurry, walking to the Eiffel Tower, Louve or Tullieries Garden from either of these locations is doable.  They are both convenient to catching one of the hop on hop off buses, which we took advantage of on our first quick trip.

What to See in Paris

Our kids on the Hop On Hop Off Bus during our 1 Day in Paris

Champs-Élysées & Arc de Triomphe

This famous avenue is perfect for an walk, shopping, or just enjoying the lively atmosphere. It is lined with cafes so its fun to stop for a meal or a beverage and watch the world of Paris go by. See the Arc de Triomphe, where you can climb to the top for a spectacular view of Paris.

Eiffel Tower & Seine River

Across the River in Front of the Eiffel Tour at Night

Kick off your Paris adventure by viewing the iconic Eiffel Tower and the Arc de Triomphe. While we haven't gone up in the tower, we hear the views are spectacular but what you don't want to miss is the twinkling lights at night. They twinkle every hour on the hour through midnight in the summer (earlier the rest of the year to save energy) so be sure to check the schedule here before your visit.  Don't miss a leisurely walk along the Seine River. It’s a serene way to soak in the city's beauty and see famous landmarks like the Musée d'Orsay and the Louvre from a distance. One of our favorite memories is getting a Nutella crepe from one of the food stalls on the street and enjoying it while the lights twinkled.  We think that the view from across the river with the lights reflecting in the water is more spectacular than being right under it.

If you do want to go up in the Eiffel Tower, be sure to purchase tickets ahead of time.

We opted for the Evening Hours at the Louvre during our last visit

The Louvre, Tuileries Garden, Musee D'lOrangerie

Even if you’re not a huge art museum fan, seeing the Mona Lisa and the Louvre's stunning architecture is a must. If you're short on time, consider taking a guided tour to hit the highlights quickly or downloading Rick Steve's free audioguide to the Lourve. It will hit the highlights for you.  Just be sure to bring along a pair of headphones. Depending on when you're visiting, the Louvre does have some later evening hours on select days.  We were able to take advantage of this on a Friday evening and still see everything we wanted to see.

A must in our itinerary is seeing Monet's Water Lilies at the Musee D'lOrangerie.  This was next of my bucket list behind the Mona Lisa to see Monet's Water Lilies in the circular museum.  There's also a few other paintings downstairs but the size of this musuem makes it perfect a quick visit.

If you want more art, add Musee D'Orsay to your itinerary.  Note that all musuems in Paris are closed on TUESDAYS so plan accordingly.

We would recommend booking tickets for all musuems ahead of time.

Once you've had your fill of art, head to the nearby Tuileries Garden for a peaceful stroll or a quick lunch at one of the garden cafes. It's the perfect spot to relax and people-watch. We've even visited in January and you can still bundle up and enjoy a stroll.

Notre-Dame & Latin Quarter

In front of the Cathedral of Notre Dame

On our first visit we were able to go into the historic Notre-Dame Cathedral before the fire. We were on the hop on hop off bus and decided to make the Cathedral our stop. Though the interior might still be under restoration, the exterior and the surrounding Île de la Cité are simply magical, especially as the sun begins to set. Afterward, cross over to the Latin Quarter, where we had lunch that day after visiting the Cathedral. Here, you can wander through charming streets, explore bookshops like Shakespeare and Company, and enjoy a meal at a classic Parisian bistro and get macaroons or another treat from a patisserie.

Montmartre & Sacré-Cœur

Don't miss Montmartre, the bohemian heart of Paris. The streets here are filled with art studios, quaint cafes, and some of the best views in the city. Stroll the Place du Tertre, the public square in Montmartre famous where the artists display and sell their work.  Another one of our favorite memories is perusing the artwork and choosing a piece that depicts the scene.  Montmartre is also a great place to pick up unique souvenirs or just enjoy a coffee or beverage while soaking in the artistic atmosphere.

Nearby, climb up to the Sacré-Cœur Basilica for a stunning view of Paris sprawling out beneath you.

Moulin Rouge & Steak Frites or a Prix Fixe Meal

Don't miss a couple of classic Parisian experiences.  Have Steak Frites (Steak and French Fries) or opt for a Prix Fixe Meal at one of the restaurants.  This is like the special of the day and consists of an appetizer, main, and dessert for a reasonable price.  Head to Moulin Rouge, the famous Parisian cabaret show.  We booked tickets that included champagne for a special experience.

Moulin Rouge

With more time here's what we would recommend that you add:

A Day Trip to Versailles

Just a short train ride from the city, Versailles offers a fascinating glimpse into the opulent lifestyle of French royalty and is on our bucket list for our next trip.  Start your day early to beat the crowds. The train from central Paris will take you directly to Versailles Château Rive Gauche station in about 45 minutes. From there, it’s a short walk to the entrance of the palace. Buy tickets in advance & wear comfortable shoes.

Paris Catacombs

A friend told us we needed to visit the Catacombs when in Paris and we've visited some in Rome, these are still on our list.  The Catacombs are a network of underground tunnels that stretch for miles beneath Paris. They were created in the late 18th century to address the city’s overflowing cemeteries. The remains of over six million people were relocated to these tunnels, and today, the Catacombs are open to the public, offering a fascinating journey into the past.  The entrance to the Catacombs is located in the 14th arrondissement at 1 Avenue du Colonel Henri Rol-Tanguy. The nearest metro station is Denfert-Rochereau, served by lines 4 and 6. From the station, it’s just a short walk to the entrance.

Booking timed ticked online will help you avoid the long lines at this surprisingly popular attraction.

Le Marais & Musée Picasso

Head to Le Marais.  This trendy area is known for its narrow medieval streets, chic boutiques, and vibrant café culture. Visit the Musée Picasso if you’re an art lover, or simply wander around to admire the architecture and perhaps grab a falafel from the famous L’As du Fallafel.

Disneyland Paris

I'm not sure this is what you would have expected to see in a post about Paris but if you're a Disney fan I would add it to your list.  Melissa had the chance to visit when her flight home was cancelled and they rebooked her for the next day (Scott had already headed off to a work meeting at a French Chateau) and Melissa had the afternoon to spare. Disneyland Paris is a quick train ride from Charles de Gaulle airport and the train takes you to the entrance of the parks.

More Tips for Your Trip to Paris

Book Your Museum and Attraction Tickets in Advance

In case you missed it, for major attractions, you need to book your tickets ahead of time to save precious minutes (or hours!) in line and avoid the disappointment of them being sold out.

Get a Metro Pass

Paris is a city best explored on foot, but when you need to cover longer distances, the Metro is convenient and easy to navigate.  We used the Metro to get to Montmartre and to the Moulin Rouge show.

Travel Light

The streets in Paris can be cobblestoned and crowded, so pack light and wear comfortable shoes. Packing light helps you navigate with your bags on the Metro too. Get our Guide to Packing Smart and Traveling Light here.

Eat and Drink your Way through Paris

Don't miss out on Parisian pastries, cheese, and wine. Pop into local bakeries and markets for a true taste of Paris. Scott cracked me up when he described all the eating we did on our Paris Podcast Epsiode.

Protect your Belongings

Keep your wallet and phone out of your back pocket and use a crossbody purse for safety especially on the Metro and in crowds. This is just a good practice anytime you travel.

Whether you're visiting Paris for the first time or returning for another dose of its magic, this list will help you experience the best of the city in a short time. Remember, preparation is key, so plan ahead and get tickets so you can enjoy every moment in the City of Light.

Bon voyage!

What would you add to this list for a short trip to Paris?
