Fairway Adventures: Exploring Golf Courses Around the World

Part Three:  Turnberry Golf Course, Scotland

A Majestic Golfing Experience at Turnberry Resort in Scotland

The skies were blue, the temperature was warm and there was no rain.  Yes we were in Scotland, the birthplace of golf.  A place that is renowned for its breathtaking landscapes and historic golf courses. Nestled along the stunning Ayrshire coastline, Turnberry golf course leaves you with a sense of accomplishment after walking off the 18th green. In this post we'll share some of our experiences playing this majestic course on a warm September day.

A Historical Haven

Turnberry Resort boasts a fascinating history that adds to its allure. The resort's iconic lighthouse, standing sentinel on the coastline, offers a glimpse into the past. It was built in 1873 and has become an emblem of the resort. As you traverse the immaculately manicured grounds, you'll feel the weight of golfing history and the aura of legendary moments that unfolded on these fairways.

The Course

Turnberry is home to two championship courses that have witnessed some of the most thrilling moments in golfing history. The Ailsa Course, regularly ranked among the world's top courses, has hosted four Open Championships. Its coastal setting, undulating fairways, and challenging holes provide an extraordinary golfing experience. The Arran Course, the resort's second 18-hole gem, offers breathtaking views of the Ayrshire coastline and demands strategic shot-making.

We had the opportunity to play King Robert the Bruce.  At 7200 yards from the longest tees, this was indeed a long course with a par of 72.  The course rating is 75.0 and it has a slope rating of 130.

It is very helpful on this course if you are able to hit it long and straight.  Any type of draw or fade can lead you into a heavy thorn thicket lining each side of the fairway.  I joked with the starter on the first tee box that I may not have brought enough golf balls.  He laughed and said that there would be plenty along the way.  Well, only if you are willing to wade into those thorny thickets looking for balls.  We were playing during the week so we met many locals that come and play during the week days.  I learned quickly that their secret was to hit the ball straight and stay on the fairway.  They didn't focus so much on how far.  Makes sense, right?  Well ego can get in the way of that plan quickly.  I did walk away from the course with one of the logo balls that I had purchased earlier in the pro shop.

The scenery was magnificent and the course conditions were impeccable.  Make sure that you don't spend too much time admiring the scenery or looking for balls.  The locals play fast and are in a hurry to get to the 19th hole to enjoy a pint.

I would recommend that you inquire about having a caddy join you on this course.  Because of the need to play fast, it is difficult to spend enough time with the yardage book that they give you to understand the best way to play this course.

Two holes on this course that are particularly satisfying are numbers 11 and 18.  Hole 11 gives you a terrific view of the historic lighthouse built in 1873 sitting on top of ruins of the 13th century castle of King Robert the Bruce.  Then on hole 18 you are playing towards the iconic Turnberry clubhouse.  After 7200 yards of golf, you will be glad to see this sight.

The greens played fair and were not full of trick elevations leaving you scratching your head after a put.

The Hotel at Trump Turnberry

The hotel was nothing short of spectacular.  Rooms were elegantly appointed and had every detail that you would expect from a 5 star resort, including some of the most majestic views of the golf course down the hill.

If you don't have time for a full 18 holes at the Turnberry, there is an 18 hole short course right in front of the hotel that you can play with a wedge and putter.

Conclusion

Playing golf at Turnberry golf course is a dream come true for any golf enthusiast.  You will definitely want to put this on your bucket list.  If you plan it just right, you could play Turnberry and the Old Course at St Andrews in the same trip.

The combination of its rich history, world-class golf courses, luxurious accommodations, and stunning surroundings make it an unforgettable experience. Whether you're a seasoned golfer or a beginner looking to immerse yourself in the game, Turnberry offers a golfing adventure like no other. Prepare to be captivated by the magic of Scottish golf as you tee off at Turnberry.
